Call for papers: Conferência Internacional “40 anos após o 25 de abril de 1974: a crise das democracias liberais”

“ Conferência Internacional - “40 anos após o 25 de abril de 1974: a crise das democracias liberais”, ISCTE-IUL (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa), 8-10 de maio de 2014, Lisboa, Portugal - A Conferência Internacional “40 anos após o 25 de abril de 1974: a crise das democracias liberais” é uma organização conjunta de três Instituições de ensino e investigação portuguesas: DCP&PP (Departamento de Ciência Política e Políticas Públicas) e do CIES-IUL (Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia), ambos pertencentes ao ISCTE-IUL (Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, http://www.iscte-iul.pt/home.aspx); do IHC-UNL (Instituto de História Contemporânea, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, http://ihc.fcsh.unl.pt/pt); e do CES-UC (Centro de Estudos Sociais, Universidade de Coimbra, http://www.ces.uc.pt/ces/ces.php). Sendo a organização científica de Fernando Rosas (IHC-UNL), André Freire e José Manuel Leite Viegas (DCP&PP e CIES-IUL, ISCTE-IUL) e José Manuel Pureza (CES-UC). No ano em que se comemoram os 40 anos após a Revolução dos Cravos portuguesa (25 de abril de 1974), que iniciou a chamada “terceira onda de democratização” em todo o mundo e a transição para a democracia em Portugal (depois de 48 anos de ditadura), a Conferência Internacional “40 anos após o 25 de abril de 1974: a crise das democracias liberais” tem dois objetivos principais. Por um lado, pretende ser uma espécie de memória académica da transição para a democracia dos últimos 40 anos. Por outro lado, recorrendo ao contributo das várias Ciências Sociais e Políticas e das Ciências Humanas (História, Ciência Política, Relações Internacionais, Economia, Sociologia, Filosofia) e combinando abordagens comparativas e históricas, esta conferência pretende refletir sobre os vários indicadores da crise das democracias liberais e representativas europeias (governos tecnocráticos com um mandato popular pouco claro, governos partidários governando sem um mandato político das suas ações, consecutivas e profundas violações dos compromissos eleitorais por governos/partidos políticos eleitos, uma enorme compressão dos direito sociais contra a vontade do povo, etc.), pelo menos após 2008, data da maior crise financeira e económica desde a Grande Depressão (1929). A Conferência terá lugar no ISCTE-IUL (Lisboa – Portugal), de 8 a 10 de maio de 2014, e terá uma sessão de abertura (com duas conferências de abertura proferidas por dois convidados) e cinco painéis académicos/temáticos, além de um painel final com os representantes dos partidos políticos representados no Parlamento português. Nos cinco painéis científicos/temáticos, metade dos trabalhos serão apresentados por convidados escolhidos pelos organizadores científicos deste Encontro e a outra metade pelos investigadores que responderem a este call for papers, depois de selecionados pelos mesmos organizadores científicos (ver abaixo o programa provisório – a seguir ao call for papers em inglês). Assim, convidamos todos os interessados em apresentar um trabalho na Conferência Internacional “40 anos após o 25 de abril de 1974: a crise das democracias liberais”, a enviar um resumo desenvolvido do mesmo (500-600 palavras no máximo), em que tanto o ponto de vista científico como os dados e metodologia utilizada sejam perfeitamente claros e especificados. As propostas de comunicação devem ainda incluir a identificação do(s) autor(es), um curto CV (cerca de 5 linhas) e um link para o CV completo de todos os autores de cada uma das proposta. A proposta de trabalho deve igualmente especificar qual o painel que pretende integrar (apenas uma única opção). Privilegiar-se-á a apresentação de trabalhos comparativos e longitudinais (isto é, que comparem as realidades dos diferentes países, mas também os diversos períodos de tempo, ou seja, o antes e o depois de 2008). A data limite de envio é a de 31 de Outubro de 2013 e os autores selecionados serão notificados até dia 30 de Novembro de 2013. A organização tem a intenção de publicar a versão revista dos trabalhos que, selecionados pela sua qualidade, venham a ser apresentados na conferência. The individual scientific organizers are Fernando Rosas (IHC-UNL), André Freire and José Manuel Leite Viegas (DCP&PP and CIES-IUL, ISCTE-IUL) and José Manuel Pureza (CES-UC). In the year that coincides with the 40 years of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution (April 25, 1974), which initiated the so-called «third-wave of democratization» world-wide, in general, and the transition to democracy in Portugal (after 48 years of dictatorship), in particular, this International Conference «40 years after April 25, 1974,the Crisis of Liberal Democracies» has two major objectives. On the one hand, it intends to be a kind of academic memorial of the successful transition to democracy 40 years ago. On the other hand, using both the contribute of several Social and Political Sciences and Humanities (History, Political Science, International Relations, Economy, Sociology, Philosophy) and combining comparative and historical approaches, the conference intends to reflect about the several indicators of a crisis of liberal and representative democracies in Europe (technocratic governments with a unclear popular mandate, party governments governing without a political mandate for their actions, consecutive and deep violation of electoral commitments by elected governments/political parties, a huge compression of social rights against the will of the people, etc.), at least since the 2008 major international financial and economic crisis since the great depression (1929). The conference will take place at ISCTE-IUL (Lisbon University Institute), 8-10 May, 2014, Lisbon, Portugal, and will have an opening session (with two opening lectures, with two invited lecturers) and will have five academic panels, plus a final panel with representatives of the political parties represented in the Portuguese Parliament. In each of the five academic panels, half of the paper givers / half of the papers will be presented by people especially invited to do so by the scientific organizers (see the draft program below), and the other half of the papers will be presented by paper givers that respond to the present call for papers and are selected to do so by the scientific organizers. Thus, we instigate everyone who intends to present a paper in the International Conference «40 years after April 25, 1974,the Crisis of Liberal Democracies», ISCTE-IUL (Lisbon University Institute), 8-10 May, 2014, Lisbon, Portugal, to present a developed abstract (500-600 words maximum), where both the scientific perspective, the data and methodology to be used are all specified. Paper proposals should also include the identification of the authors, a short CV (around 5 lines) for all papers givers in each proposal, and a link to the full CV for all papers givers in each proposal. The paper proposal should also specify in which panel they want to be included (only one option for each paper). Deadline for presenting papers: 31 October 2013. Final answer acceptance / non-acceptance: 30 November 2013. Comparative and longitudinal (i.e., comparing not only countries but also time periods: before and after 2008) papers are mostly wanted. We intend to publish the revised version of the papers presented at the conference and selected by their high quality.
